1st Autumn term 2023
English - Year 6 begin the term with a sophisticated piece of writing combining different text types - an explanation within a narrative. Ambitious! Next, we will be creating rousing, unifying, inspiring speeches in a piece of work called Battle Cry. Using examples from history (Churchill) and film (Braveheart), we will develop our own speeches uniting everyone - our class, all of Hollin, the world! - against a common enemy.
Spellings – Spellings are handed out on Friday afternoon and the class will be tested on that list the following Friday.
Maths – We will begin the year by ensuring basic calculation - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division - is secure and used confidently. We will enjoy a change of focus towards the end of the half-term by investigating area, perimeter and volume.
Topic – Our first topic is titled Where in the World is Brazil? We study this fascinating country in-depth, looking at both the wonders of its natural history and the realities of urban life. We also use the topic as a springboard into the science of evolution and adaptation. We liven things up with a bit of Rio Carnival, get all scientific with the study of fossils and somehow fit in some abstract art, too.
Homework – Homework is handed out every Thursday and is due back by the following Monday. Normally, it will consist of Maths and English (activities taken from a variety of CGP books which the children are expected to take care of).
Reading – Children are expected to read every night. They should bring their reading book in daily and take regular Accelerated Reading tests to ensure progress is made.
PE – Our PE day is Monday. Please ensure that your child has a PE kit which consists of: white t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/joggers and pumps/trainers.
